About this course

English for Academic Purposes is an intensive course that prepares you for future academic studies.

This course will be delivered by Universal English College (UEC) on behalf of Australian International Studies Institute Pty Ltd trading as UEC Business

It’s designed to create your pathway into university – at an undergraduate or postgraduate level – a Foundation Studies Program, or a Technical (such as TAFE) or Vocational College.

From presentations and projects to writing and referencing, this course trains you to overcome all possible language challenges – so you can pass every assessment.

You will also:

  • Get in-depth training on all aspects of academic writing
  • Receive regular, personalised feedback on your progress
  • Have access to academic counselling to advance your learning quickly

What you will learn

Thanks to this course, you will learn how to:

Express facts, ideas and opinions in writing – using correct vocabulary and grammar

Effectively take notes during seminars, lectures and tutorials

Properly reference, paraphrase and quote in English

Appropriately structure and write texts such as critical reviews and other essays

Understand and interpret academic texts when conducting research

Present clearly and confidently in front of a group and during debates

Perform in-depth analyses

Entry requirements 

To enrol in this course, you must be 18 years or older. Other entry requirements include:

  • EAP 1: IELTS score of 4.5 or equivalent
  • EAP 2: IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent
  • EAP 3: IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent

If you do not have an IELTS score, you need to complete the Placement Test. This will determine your proficiency in English – and the right course and level for you.

Course levels

The course has three levels:

  • EAP 1 (10 weeks)
  • EAP 2 (10 weeks)
  • EAP 3 (10 or 20 weeks)

How you will be assessed

Overall, there are 10 assessments and two essays for each course level.

However, we will also assess you through regular class tasks and assignments, such as oral presentations. That way, we can continually make sure your classes suit the pace and progress of your learning.
